Once more, the Golfing Society were up against unknown opposition in this first round Front Pin Cup matchup against third division Villagers.
Never a favourite alley of the Golfing Society, the Black Horse posed it's usual duck problems for the away side, but despite "scoring" twelve ducks, the Golfing Society progressed through to the next round with a winning margin of sixteen pins.
For the second week running top scoring Starting Price (28) and Chairman Leprechaun (25) got the Golfing Society off to a magnificent start by pulling twenty four pins despite the small pins and the differing sized balls!
Crabbers (21) got off to a slow start, and the Accountant (13) having trouble with his balls, they still managed to get the upper hand and grabbed a further three pins to add to the Golfing Society's commanding lead.
Finally, cup captain Ned (18) and the smooth handed Builder (14) brought the match to it's end by losing eleven pins against game opposition.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.
The Golfing Society's next match is on the 2nd January home to Olveston Youngsters in a top of the table clash.

Wickwar Sports run Golfing Society close 119 - 124
Having played and won at the Swan Tytherington a couple of weeks ago, the Golfing Society were confident of victory. However a spirited fight back by the home side saw them take the lead on their last up leaving the Golfing Society to score three for victory, which was sealed with a seven to see the Golfing Society home by five pins.
Chairman (no ducks!) Leprechaun (26) top scored for the Golfing Society, and along with the Capt (21) established a comfortable twenty three pin lead over their newly promoted opponents.
Late on parade Gibbo (23) and cashpoint Crabbers (13) then equalled home side's five ducks but lost seven pins to reduce the Golfing Society's lead to sixteen pins.
Wisdomless Ned (20) pulled a valuable two pins despite three ducks, unfortunately the Builder (21) lost eleven pins against an inspired opponent, but the Golfing Society were home and dry with two more points under their belt.
Next week and the week after are reserved for the next round of the cup (details on the Golfing Society Web Site).
We have been drawn away to The Villagers who have yet to confirm a date.

Last nights match versus Wot-U-Wots postponed
Last nights eagerly awaited match up against the Wot-U-Wots had to be postponed due to the unavailability of the Rugby Club alley, as an impromptu meeting of the rugby players was being held in the skittles hall.
Unfortunately this was the second time that this has happened, and although the alley was booked for 8.30pm the meeting did not finish until after 9.00pm, and we had no alternative but to postpone the match until the New Year.
Next league match is Thursday 12th December versus Wickwar Sports at the Swan Tytherington.

Woodpeckers beaten by well drilled Golfing Society 133 - 141
The Golfing Society played at the Swan Tytherington for the first time in many years and were happy to come away with an eight pin victory against the newly promoted Woodpeckers.
Chairman Leprechaun (14) and Crabbers (25) got the Golfing Society off to a steady start by only dropping three pins to the home side's opening pair.
Needing a quick response, the Golfing Society's middle pairing of the Capt (23) and the Accountant (15) managed to pull back two pins leaving the final pair with the task of at least pulling two pins for victory.
Not to be denied, top scoring and double tote winner Ned (33) and the Builder (31) both skittled with commendable accuracy and beat their opposing pair ( despite a twelve spare) by nine pins, to secure the two points for a well earned victory.
Next weeks match is at home against the Wot-U-Wots on Thursday 5th December.

The Golfing Society stuttered to victory against their fifth division opponents in this seasons preliminary round of the Front Pin Cup competition, winning by only seven pins.
Crabbers (19) and Chairman Leprechaun (19) having to play with borrowed balls, both struggled and could only pull two pins against their opposite numbers.

However, a spirited fight back by Chiltern Rovers saw Starting Price (21) lose eighteen pins, but the top scoring Builder (32) rallied the home side by pulling five pins to see the Golfing Society through to the next round.

Both teams saved their best performances of the season for last nights matchup at the Wheatsheaf. The Golfing Society attained their highest away score of the season, and a dominant Roaring Twenties outfit scored three spares to consign the Golfing Society to only their third defeat of the season.
The writing was literally on the wall when the first pair of Gibbo (23) and Chairman Leprechaun (20) slumped to an eighteen pin deficit from which the Golfing Society were unable to recover.
Sending on the big guns of the Accountant (28) and top scoring Crabbers (33) served only to stem the leakage of pins, as the Roaring Twenties shook the Golfing Society with the second of their three spares to maintain their eighteen pin lead.
With Capt Pinder dropped, it was up to Ned (31) and the Builder (27) to pull the match back for the Golfing Society, but another spare by the home side proved too much for the Golfing Society who lost a further three pins in a twenty one pin defeat.
Next Thursday, there are two home matches with a 7.45 start in the All In Cup against 6th Division opponents Forget Me Knots, and then a league matchup against the Dog Bowlers at 9.00pm.

Ones and Twos at sixes and sevens against impressive Golfing Society 141 - 124
The Golfing Society continued in their winning ways with a seventeen pin away win against a resolute home side at the Swan Thornbury.
Once again, the opening pair put the pressure on their opposite numbers with Crabbers (29) and Chairman Leprechaun (28) propelling the Golfing Society into a fifteen pin lead.
However, it was the same old story with the Golfing Society's middle pair failing to capitalise on the lead given them, with an ailing Accountant (15) and the Capt (13) still seemingly in holiday mode, they lost nine pins to keep the Golfing Society in front by just six pins.
When Ned (30) and the Builder (26) both started off with ducks, it looked like a rare defeat was on the cards for the Golfing Society. There was no need to worry however, as they soon got into their respective strides and pulled a further eleven pins to ease the Golfing Society to a satisfying away win.
Next match is at the Wheatsheaf next Wednesday against the Roaring Twenties 8.30pm start.

Golfing Society rout F Troop 137 - 126
The Golfing Society continued their winning run by defeating F Troop by eleven pins to continue their advance up the league table.
Crabbers (34) and chairman Leprechaun (22) drove the Golfing Society into an early twenty nine pin lead which left F Troop looking at a mountain to climb to pull the match back.
However, the mountain proved to be deceptive as Gibbo (10) and the Accountant (14) struggled to find any form and lost the twenty nine pin advantage to leave the match all square at eighty pins apiece.
A strong rearguard action by Ned (31) and the Builder (26) eventually pulled the match round to bag another two points for a resurgent Golfing Society.
Next weeks match is on Friday 1st November at the Swan Thornbury versus Ones & Twos.

Rafters almost sink Golfing Society 89 - 93
This was the Golfing Society's first ever visit to Hanson's Social Club to play last years third division champions. Having negotiated the roadworks and route diversion through Hanson's cement yard, the Golfing Society finally managed to come away victorious by four pins against a tenacious home side.
Mr Wobbly (7) and the top scoring Capt (25) pulled the Golfing Society into a slender lead, and were ably supported by Chairman Leprechaun (21) and the Accountant (17) to put the Golfing Society into a twenty seven pin lead.
However, the Golfing Society then proceeded to lose twenty three pins with Ned (4) and the Builder (19) just managing to pip the Rafters by four pins at the finish.
Next week will see Capt Lewis in charge against the Hasslers at home 8.30 start.

First league win for Golfing Society against The Service 135 - 123
The Golfing Society held their nerve against extremely fast skittling, to record their first league win after two previous near misses.
With several unavailability's, the team format was once again juggled around with Mr Wobbly (15) and Crabbers (21) in the starting pair line-up, and pulled three pins to give the Golfing Society a slender lead.
Chairman Leprechaun (29) and the Capt (16) dropped a couple of pins against the Service's middle pair, and with the Accountant on his summer hols, the old pairing of Ned (24) and the Builder (30) were once more reunited to bring the Golfing Society home to win by twelve pins.
Next match is at Hansons Social Club in Chipping Sodbury, 8.30pm start. Friday 27th.

Persuaders brush aside Golfing Society 102 - 95
In their first meeting for many a year, it was the Persuaders who came off the alley deserved winners, after another poor display from the Golfing Society who amassed a total of fifteen ducks in the match.
Gibbo (9) went from top score last week to bottom score this week, and together with Crabbers (17) they lost eight pins.
The Capt (16) and Ned (17) did nothing to help the situation and lost a further 4 pins to put the Golfing Society twelve pins adrift.
The Accountant (15) and the Builder (21) both beat their opponents, but could only pull back five pins to leave the Persuaders celebrating, and the Golfing Society at the foot of division 2.
Next weeks match is home on Thursday to the Service, 8.30 start.

Golfing Society pipped by Newtonians
The Golfing Society's first league match in Division 2 was a great disappointment, as the home side lost by two pins to continue their poor form that led to relegation last year.
With three of the team unavailable due to other commitments, Mr Wobbly (15) made one of his rare appearances in the team, but despite a cracking score from Gibbo (35), the opening pair lost twelve pins to JD and little Sean.
Chairman Leprechaun (15) and the Capt (23) rallied the Golfing Society by pulling sixteen pins from Dickie Low and Tet.
With the Golfing Society now in a four pin lead, the anchor pair of the Accountant (21) and the Builder (20) should have seen the home side to victory, but a spirited revival by Nobby Curtis and Birdy, saw the Newtonians sneak home to consign the Golfing Society to their first defeat of the season.
Next weeks match is Tuesday at the Blackhorse, 8.30 start versus the Persuaders.

Golfing Society sink Ship A 158 - 212
The Golfing Society kicked off their 2013 - 2014 season with a resounding win in the preliminary round in this season's All-in Cup competition.
Gibbo (30) and Chairman Leprechaun (31) got the Golfing Society off to a great start by pulling eight pins against their third division opponents.
Crabbers (39) and Starting Price (34) increased the Golfing Society's lead by a further twenty pins to leave the away side well in control of this cup matchup.
The Accountant (41) and the Builder (37) pulled 26 pins to give last years All-in Cup runners up a comfortable victory by fifty four pins.
Next weeks match at home will bring a greater challenge as the Golfing Society begin their league challenge to bounce back to the First Division after last years surprise relegation!

White Hart A bid farewell to Golfing Society 116 - 89
Another poor day at the office consigned the Golfing Society to their twenty second league and final defeat of the season. Next season will see a rebadged and rejuvenated Golfing Society bidding to bounce back to the premier division at the first attempt.
The Leprachaun (18) and Gibbo (14) were unlucky to drop four pins against their opponents.
The Capt (12) and the Accountant (5) both had a match to forget and effectively handed the White Hart A the match points by dropping a further fifteen pins.
Ned (22) top scored for the away side, but despite his and the Builder's (18) efforts, they were unable to make any impression on the home side and lost eight pins to lose the match by twenty seven pins.
All in all a season to forget in terms of league performance, but the team were rewarded for their efforts by becoming runners up in this seasons All-In cup completion.

Magnificent Golfing Society crush Stone CC 170 - 126
The Golfing Society in their final home game of the season at last produced a performance to be proud of by comprehensively defeating the league leaders by forty four pins.
Crabbers (23) and Miss Leading (24) set the tone for the match by pulling two pins to give the home side a slender lead.
Gibbo (39) saved the best for last by producing a stunning performance out of the hat, and together with the Capt (28) took the match away from the league leaders to give the Golfing Society a thirty five pin lead.
Ned (28) and the Accountant (28) cemented the unlikely win by pulling a further nine pins to produce the Golfing Society's best home score of the season.
The Golfing Society's final match in league one will be a 7.30 start at the White Hart on Monday against the White Hart A.

Golfing Society boxed out by Puglers 131 - 146
In their penultimate home game, the Golfing Society were looking for their traditional end of season win against the Puglers, but it was a case of wishful thinking as the Golfing Society's poor home run continued with a fifteen pin defeat.
The Leprachaun (16) and Gibbo (22) lost ten pins to put the Golfing Society on the back foot, but the Capt (21) and top scoring Ned (33) rescued the situation by pulling back seven pins to leave the home side adrift by just three pins.
The Accountant (24) and the Builder (15) were unable to improve the situation and dropped twelve pins to consign the already relegated Golfing Society to another home defeat.

Golfing Society breeze past Five + One 131 - 105
It's been a long time coming, but following on from their last away victory, also at the Black Horse, the Golfing Society at last look like a decent skittles side now that the fear of relegation has been lifted and become a reality.
The Capt (22) and Crabbers (12) kicked things off, but lost six pins in the process.
Gibbo (22) arrived late and replaced the Leprachaun as he and Ned (23) rescued the game for the away team by pulling twenty six pins and putting the Golfing Society on track for a rare victory.
The Accountant (25) and the Builder (27) consolidated the Golfing Society's first win since the 1st February by grabbing a further six pins to see the Golfing Society home by twenty six pins.

Golfing Society relegated by Skuttlers 151 - 152
The Golfing Society were left with nothing but onion bargees and samosas after a cruel last ball defeat at the hands of a resurgent Skuttlers outfit, which relegated the Golfing Society to the second tier of Thornbury Skittles. Take away nothing from Brillo who scored the decisive six pins with his last ball, but the Golfing Society will feel agrieved that the chance of victory was so cruelly taken away from them.
The Capt (29) and Miss Ile (22) pulled two pins against Who Moved the Balls Rutter and R'John, but Crabbers (24) and the Leprachaun (15) promptly lost five pins to Speed of Light Ben and Captain Skuttle, to leave the match all to play for at just three pins down.
With the Accountant "rested", Ned (28) and the Builder (33) top scoring for the home team again, pulled two pins from Trev and Brillo, but luck has deserted the Golfing Society this season and the match and their first division status was lost by a solitary pin.
Next weeks match is on Monday at the Black Horse against Five + One, where the Golfing Society will be looking for their first victory since the 1st Feb.

Golfing Society mauled by Alley Cat Strays 155 - 175
A positive result looked to be on the cards when the Alley Cat Strays turned up with only four players, but after frantic mobile phone calls the missing players arrived and the match was put back on an equal footing, which was unfortunate for the Golfing Society who went on to lose by twenty pins.
Gibbo (26) and the Leprachaun (27) got the home side off to a decent start, but Isaacs & Dean out scored them by eleven pins.
Crabbers (22) and Ned (23) were powerless to reduce the deficit, and lost a further eighteen pins to Love & Browning.
The Accountant (18) had an off night, but with the Builder (39) in sparkling form, they managed to pull back nine pins from Hobbs & Fowler, but the match was lost.

Golfing Society shot down by Lone Rangers
The Golfing Society were four points from safety with two games in hand when they met the high flying Lone Rangers, who are pressing for second place in the league.
At the end of the night it was the same old story for the struggling home side with two many ducks and not enough high scores to trouble their visitors.
With Gibbo and the Builder both unavailable for the match, the home side kicked off with the Capt (27) scoring a duck, and Miss Unbelievable (35) starting with a fourteen spare, to give the Golfing Society a six pin lead against Ponting & Curtis.
Things didn't start well for Crabbers (22) who suffered a blow to the head prior to the match, whilst he was "enjoying" a heady cocktail of lime and soda. Together with Ned (23) the pairing lost nine pins to the Longman father and son pair, and the Golfing Society were now three pins down in the match.
Unfortunately for the Golfing Society, their opponents were on top form, and the Leprachaun (22) and the Accountant (24) lost nineteen pins to Cumming and Ponting (Jnr) and the home side were beaten by twenty two pins.
Next week there are two away matches to Stone CC 8pm start Wednesday, and Wot-u-Wots 7.30pm start Friday.

Odds & Ends crush poor Golfing Society 156 - 138
The Golfing Society's poor run of form continued with an eighteen pin defeat at the hands of the Odds & Ends at the Catholic club on Tuesday evening.
With Gibbo and Miss Miss missing, it fell upon the Capt (17) and Crabbers (23) to get the evening off to a good start, but unfortunately they dropped nineteen pins which the following pairings for the Golfing Society were unable to make up.
Ned (15) and the Leprachaun (24) dropped a further six pins and the match was effectively all over before the final pair were even on.
Top scoring for the Golfing Society was the Accountant (31) and along with the Builder (28) pulled back seven pins, but the match was lost and the Golfing Society are in deep trouble at the wrong end of the league table.
Next weeks match is a bottom of the table clash with the Skuttlers, home at the Rugby Club where the Golfing Society will be looking for that vital home win which will re-ignite their season.

The Golfing Society came up short against the Inlaws by twelve pins to leave themselves firmly in the relegation mire.

This was quickly snuffed out however, as Ned (28) and the Builder (33) despite being the home side's top pairing for the evening, dropped three pins and the match was lost.

Golfing Society score seasons highest but still lose to Ship A Hoys 214 - 234
Playing against the Ship A Hoys seems to bring out the best in the Golfing Society, but despite scoring the team's highest home and away scores, the Golfing Society have still lost both league matches this season.
Gibbo (35) and top scoring Crabbers (43) got the Golfing Society off to a good start, but still lost three pins to the high flying home side.
The Capt (37) eager to avenge last years low score of eleven, and the Leprachaun (39) set about the home side and pulled a magnificent six pins to leave the Golfing Society with a slender three pin advantage.
However the Ship A Hoys cranked up the scoring rate to deny the Golfing Society victory with the Accountant (40) and the luckless Ned (20) dropping twenty three pins by the final bell.

Golfing Society knocked out of Front Pin Cup by A Men 129 - 141
The Golfing Society's front pin cup dreams lay in tatters after Thursday's defeat to third division A Men (and ladies).
Crabbers (22) and Starting Price (27) got the Golfing Society off to an excellent start by pulling eleven pins, much to the delight of cup captain Ned who was sidelined with a painful back condition.
However, it all went Pete Tong with the introduction of Gibbo (10) and the Leprachaun (15) who lost twenty four pins and "scored" five ducks between them in a dismal performance.
The Builder (24) and the Accountant (31) tried manfully to recover the situation, but ultimately were only able to pull back one pin and the match was lost by twelve pins.
